Marc Meijers, founder and owner of design studio
MMD Design Innovation, is known among other
things for having developed a spectacular method
to repurpose discarded and surplus jeans materials.
Marc’s aim for the In4nite II project was to devise
an attractive design that combines the aesthetic
appearance of the Colback® material with its
outstanding tensile strength. The product amounts
to an impeccable expression of the balance between
technique and design.


To start with, Marc determined which existing
product relies entirely on its tensile strength in
order to function properly. A lounge chair, that has
to support its user’s weight solely on the base of
stretched cloth, met this requirement. To create
tension within the Colback® non-woven, Marc
constructed a design in which the use of springs
and turnbuckles guarantee a continuous tension
on the material.

To prevent gradual creep within the
Colback® material, special versions of the product
have been used, in which the Colback® non-woven
is reinforced by glass fibers and a scrim.


Marc’s lounge chair was designed to emphasize
its remarkable functionality, without losing sight
of the aesthetics. A powder coated, slim metal
frame that is open on either side makes the lounge
chair look elegant and lightweight. The design
was engineered in 3D CAD software, and tested in
ergonomic proportions by virtual manikins. Marc’s
objective was to develop a product that balances
the rational with the emotional. This goal was
achieved thanks to his creativity, coupled with
the unique properties of Colback®.
