Mieke van den Hout (Studio Mieke Lucia) studied
Product Design at ArtEZ in Arnhem, where she
graduated with a bag collection in 2015. During her
studies, she has always worked a great deal with
fabric and other flexible materials. She was able to
apply all her acquired experimental techniques in
form and material in such a practical object that a
portable bag is. Since then, her work has become
larger and more abstract, transitioning from
products for the body to objects on the wall.

Mieke discovered the potentialities of the Colback®
material by experimenting with it. Allowing room
for play, exploration, and surprises is imperative in
her design process. This year’s open call came as
a chance to apply the knowledge and experience
that she had already amassed into the design of
a second collection. Mieke explored the ways in
which Colback® is used for the flooring industry.

Through carefully conducted tests with the
Colback® fleece, she has conceived the perfect
texture for hand tufting. The Colback® type she
uses is one of a low-elongation type, and due to
the unique Colback structure the material is durable
and lightweight, and yet strong enough to withstand
the force of the tufting gun.

Her aim for this project is to shed light upon
tufting techniques in such a way that it is both
comprehensible as well as aesthetically pleasing

Tangible Tufts is the result of carefully conducted tests with the Colback membrane. The Colback used  has a low stretch quality, which makes it durable, lightweight, and yet strong enough to withstand the force of the tufting gun. Tangible Tufts shows light upon tufting techniques in such a way that it is both comprehensible as well as aesthetically pleasing.
